Candidates – Watch out for this barrier

A new condition for filing

This year’s candidate filings have been held up by a new condition: If you have an outstanding delinquency with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance, you will not be allowed to file as a candidate for 2026.

So, if you haven’t submitted all your past reports, or have a problem on a report that hasn’t been resolved, you will be turned away when you try to file this year. And with the deadline coming up this Friday, you only have a few days to take care of the matter.

This has already caught some candidates off guard, as it was not a requirement in the past. But KREF has gotten more stringent with its reviews of reports (and with its fines), so it’s not totally a surprise.

Fortunately, most of those who were stopped from filing were able to work out agreements with KREF to take care of any outstanding issues. But, if you were one of those planning on filing on Friday, better check your standing with KREF before you drive to Frankfort.
