Our Values
As an online outlet, we believe it is important for all our readers and members to know what we value and strive for. We began this work because we are passionate about a number of things. Here are the most important ones.
Objective News and Analysis
If an article is tagged as "News" or "Analysis," we treat it as any good journalist would: we do it straight-up and fact-based. We include sources, explain details, and work to follow solid journalism practices.
Occasionally, some commentary may be included in a news or analysis article; if this happens, we add the "Commentary" tag. And, we print corrections if we learn that something in the article is incorrect.
Progressive Commentary
Our editorial stance is unabashedly progressive. We support such policies as a living wage, the rule of law, protection of the commons, and universal health care. We are opposed to racism, sexism, White supremacy, Christian Nationalism, and authoritarianism.
We are also pragmatic. We want clear goals for government, and policies that are shown to move our society toward those goals. In other words, we want government that works ... for all.
Transparency
We strive to provide transparency in our work. When an article is cross-posted from elsewhere, we include the author (if known) and a link to the original. If information comes from a press release, we indicate that. And we include canonical URLs for articles from other sources, so that search engines know where to look for the original.
Our Value Proposition
A “value proposition” is a statement by a business explaining why someone should purchase their products or services, and why the value they provide is unique or better.
At Forward Kentucky, we actually have multiple value props, depending on which of our target audiences you fall into. You may be part of more than one, in which case our work would be even more valuable to you.
Here, then, are our value propositions, broken down by audience.
Political news junkie
Our focus is Kentucky politics, policies, and politicians. If you try to follow political news across the state, you have to go to multiple outlets and read multiple authors. Here, you can get all your Kentucky politics in one place. You can even sign up for The Wrap, our regular newsletter that wraps up all the news in one easy-t0-scan email right in your inbox.
In addition, we provide unmatched coverage of the sessions of the General Assembly, including a morning newsletter that wraps up everything that happened in Frankfort the day before.
Kentucky progressive
If you are a progressive in this predominantly red state, you may sometimes feel isolated, and wonder if there are others who see things the way you do. By reading Forward Kentucky, you will quickly learn that you are not alone, and in fact there is a strong progressive movement across the state. You’ll be able to keep up with that movement, and learn how to support it.
Citizen activist
Looking to make a difference in our state? You can use our Activism and Meeting Calendars to see what is happening in your area, and how to sign up. You can use our KYGA newsletter to see when and where committees are meeting in Frankfort. You can learn of events happening across the state, including rallies and protests. And, you can use our resources to be a more effective activist and to stay safe while doing so.
During the General Assembly, you can use our Bill Trackers to follow bills as they move through the legislature. You can even create your own list of bills you are following, and it will be updated every night with what happened the day befor.
Voter, candidate, or volunteer
During election season, we run Election Central, which includes contact information for every Democratic or progressive candidate, so you can either check out their web site and social media to learn more about them, or reach out to them to donate or volunteer. We do reports on fund-raising, and do interviews with many of the candidates. Unlike other outlets, we focus on state races, from big to small.
There are our four value propositions. If you look around the state at other media outlets, you will see that no other outlet provides all this to its readers and members. That’s why over thousands of people turn to Forward Kentucky for their Kentucky political coverage, and why over 1,000 have signed up as members.
