LEXINGTON, Ky. — The field of candidates looking to replace Kentucky Rep. Andy Barr, R-Lexington, in Washington continues to grow. The latest person to throw their hat into the ring is Democrat Erin Petrey of Lexington. She is the fourth Democrat to enter the race for Kentucky’s sixth congressional district.
Petrey announced her candidacy just after Labor Day with a campaign ad focused on bourbon.
“We need new voices, we need new perspectives, and we need folks who aren’t just going to focus on ‘well, my party says this, so I need to do that,’” Petrey said.
The Kentuckian, whose career has taken her around the globe and who spent several years working in Washington, D.C., describes herself as a political outsider who’s not beholden to the Democratic establishment.
“So I think I am part of the Democratic Party, a very growing part of the Democratic Party, who realizes that we can’t keep operating in this same way, because doing the same thing over and over and over again is the definition of insanity,” Petrey said. “If the other party is going to continue to undermine democracy and undermine the laws and rules that we have, you know, we have to change the narrative and we have to change the playbook.”
“A proud graduate of Fayette County Public Schools, Erin went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in International Affairs and Anthropology from The George Washington University and a Master’s Degree in Diplomacy and International Commerce from the Patterson School of Diplomacy at the University of Kentucky,” Petrey’s campaign website said.
Petrey said she opposes the tariffs enacted by the Trump administration and the cuts made on the federal level to Medicaid, which some believe will directly impact rural Kentucky hospitals.
She also feels strongly about campaign finance reform.
