Citizens and council members say ICE detaining Louisvillians

Mayor says LMPD not involved

Are U.S. immigration officials taking Louisvillians into custody? One group of Metro Councilmembers and Louisville activists say it's happening at an office just south of downtown.

“This is no longer just a check-in site, it’s a trap,” former Kentucky State Representative Attica Scott said.

Advocacy groups are blaming the Intensive Supervision Appearance Program (ISAP), which operates under U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and has an office in Louisville.

The program, touted by the feds as an alternative to detention, allows undocumented immigrants to stay in their communities while going through the immigration process under supervision, with the help of a case worker. It requires individuals appear for their scheduled court hearings, and if they miss them or other required appointments, contracted case managers have the authority to notify ICE.

Mayor responds

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said on Tuesday there isn’t much he can say about these claims, but they are working to confirm if this is true.

“Let me assure the entire community of one thing, that LMPD Louisville Metro government is not involved with that. We are focused on preventing violent crime here locally and responding to violent crime locally. Immigration enforcement actions are a federal government responsibility, and LMPD is not involved,” Greenberg said.
