All hail to the Honorable James Comer, the Honorable Brett Guthrie, the Honorable Andy Barr, and the Honorable Hal Rogers!
Like all but four Republican members of Congress, these fine gentlemen did everything they possibly could to prevent the release of the Epstein files, which is filled with a lot of insalubrious references to President Trump and his alleged propensities. Why, this foursome even joined the entire Republican House caucus in being absent for most of the days since August, when House Speaker Mike Johnson sent his cohort home to avoid talk and especially votes on releasing the files concerning one of the greatest pedophile rings ever. Thank you, Congressmen Comer, Guthrie, Barr, and Rogers for your vacation service!
But all four of these valiant members of Congress flipped their votes at the last minute on Nov. 18, when it was obvious even to President Trump that there would be a vote and that any Republicans voting against would land on the wrong side of history. I mean, the campaign ads about Comer, Guthrie, and Barr putting Trump before teenage sex-trafficking victims write themselves, don’t they? Even a worm knows when to turn, so thank you for your expedience. Better late than never. I guess.
Now, Comer and Guthrie won’t have Trump endorsing their primary challengers, sight unseen, like Congressman Tom Massie. Say what you want about Massie — and there’s plenty to say — but he did not compromise his own principles on behalf of the most compromised president in history. But no good deed goes unpunished – especially by the Trump regime. Comer and Guthrie know the president and his tantrums well. And their careers are what counts, right?
Now, Barr is not seeking re-election; however, the ever-ambitious Andy Barr really, really, really needs a Trump endorsement for his upcoming race for U.S. Senate in what promises to be a crowded field. How could justice for these victims outweigh that need to put Trump first and foremost? Once again, priorities, after all.
The one congressman whom I don’t understand is Hal Rogers. He’s retiring after nearly 50 years in Congress and didn’t even have to worry about being primaried due to a petulant Trump tantrum. Rogers didn’t even need courage to stand up to get justice for these victims. He did all he could to deny justice to the thousand Epstein victims in return for nothing at all. How sad is that? He’s the saddest case of the lot – and that’s really, truly saying something.
There’s one thing that would be even sadder than this sad lot. That’s if they really believe that voters are going to forget that, after all of the months and months of stalling, even relying on lengthy vacations, Comer, Guthrie, and Barr only contributed their votes when it was as obvious as Trump’s double chins that the votes were no longer needed. That would be worse than sad; that would be spectacularly stupid.
Comer, Guthrie, Barr, and Rogers don’t deserve kudos; they deserve condemnation.
