Kentucky House Bill 4, last year’s legislation banning diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in public higher education institutions, has caused the Western Kentucky University Society of Black Alumni to disaffiliate from WKU.
The society — no longer part of the WKU Alumni Association — is now taking steps to become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, it stated on social media last Wednesday. WKU had stated that the society could maintain its official university affiliation and retain operational university support — but only if the society had changed its core qualities, according to the society.
“They told us to erase everything about ‘Black’ … We would have had to change our name (remove Black), our mission (remove black). and our preferences for scholarship recipients (Black students),” the society stated. “… the options presented would not have allowed our organization to fully uphold the mission. Our mission is not up for negotiation.”
