Lawmakers in Washington are expected to vote on the PERMIT Act, a bill that could change how water pollution is regulated across the country.
Environmental groups warn the effects could reach Kentucky, especially along the Ohio River.
The Kentucky Waterways Alliance said the bill could open the door to more pollution in waterways already facing strain.
“What we have here is a series of 18 really bad ideas that have been presented in the U.S. Congress as a gift to industry and polluters,” said Michael Washburn, executive director of the Kentucky Waterways Alliance.
Washburn said it would roll back key parts of the Clean Water Act, the federal law created to regulate water pollution and protect water quality.
“The PERMIT Act has language that would no longer make industries disclose their PFAS discharges,” Washburn said. “So they could be putting PFAS out in rivers and streams in drinking water sources, and they don’t even have to let the EPA know that they’re doing this.”
