Fewer Democratic lawmakers and candidates have been making the trip to the famous St. Jerome Picnic at Fancy Farm, and the leader of McCracken County Democrats said there’s good reason.
Kentucky Democrats were out in numbers Thursday in Paducah, attending the 19th annual Alben Barkley Dinner, hosted by the McCracken County Democrats.
“It’s on us, here in our local party, to rise up with a fresh economic vision,” said Michael McVickers, chair of McCracken County Democrats. “It’s for us to resist the powers of the Republican’s corporate, campaign finance.”
McVickers said in recent years, many Democrats have made a conscious decision to forgo stumping at the annual event.
“Republicans would like to say that we’re scared of rural voters, but when they bus in dozens of people from other cities, they’re yelling over the actual local Democratic voices we have,” McVickers said. “It’s manufacturing support.”
McVickers said Democrats across the state are in talks to host an alternative event that may prove more productive than shouting over shuttled critics.
