Kentucky leaders debate potential budgetary shortfall ahead of General Assembly

Senator says governor is making it up.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WCHS) — A budget showdown is brewing in Kentucky two months before lawmakers gavel in for the next session of the General Assembly.

The governor calls it a shortfall while a state senator calls it a misread.

“Here in Kentucky, we are facing a $305 million budget shortfall in our current fiscal year,” Gov. Andy Beshear said. “This is due in part to President Trump's tariffs and the negative impact they are having on the American economy.”

Sen. Chris McDaniel (R-Kenton), chair of the Appropriations and Revenue Committee, said the budget was built knowing there would be a reduction in income tax and with a substantial amount of reserve leftover.

“There won’t be a budget shortfall. I’m not worried about that at all,” McDaniel said. “I have a different opinion than people who have political aspirations outside the Commonwealth.”
