Massie blasts Venezuela intervention in NYT interview

More congressional GOP members likely break with Trump on Venezuela, but won't speak out, Massie claims

Republican U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie blasted the recent controversial Venezuelan intervention ordered by President Donald Trump in a New York Times interview published Jan. 8, saying the indictment of Nicolás Maduro was based on a “flimsy constitutional argument” and that he believes Republican voters are likely to sour quickly on U.S. involvement in the South American country.

One of Trump’s major critics on Capitol Hill, Massie said that despite current widespread approval of the U.S. strike in Venezuela among GOP voters, he believes excitement will wane similar to sentiment during the Gulf War and the situation “isn't going to get better with age.”

“People are going to realize that free oil doesn’t mean free oil for them. The oil is going to the oil companies,” he said. “Ultimately, this military adventurism is not going to bring prices down across the board. Right now, it’s a politically perilous position for me to take, but I think with age, it might start to look better.”
