Massie, Paul cosponsor resolutions to block unauthorized ‘hostilities’ against Venezuela

Including open-ocean attacks on Venezuelan boats

Several Kentucky lawmakers on Capitol Hill are pushing back against the Trump administration’s use of deadly missile strikes against alleged Venezuelan drug smuggling boats.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Crescent Springs) has joined Democrats on a resolution meant to rein in the Trump administration’s policy.

It directs the president to “remove the use of United States Armed Forces from hostilities within or against Venezuela, unless explicitly authorized by a declaration of war or specific statutory authorization for use of military force.”

“This is the problem; they’re out over their skis, in front of their skis on this,” Massie told Spectrum News Thursday. “There needs to be congressional declarations that say you can do this or you can’t do this, and that’s why I’ve cosponsored a war powers resolution.”

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has repeatedly expressed concerns about the boat strikes and told Fox Business he thinks they are a “prelude to an invasion of Venezuela.”
