Days after the U.S. Department of Justice announced a $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund” meant to “redress claims of others who suffered weaponization and lawfare,” outgoing U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell said the decision was “utterly stupid” and “morally wrong” in a May 21 statement.
The Republican senator’s criticism joins other longtime GOP members and Democrats that have called the money a “slush fund” or expressed concern over how it would be used. According to reporting from USA TODAY, the fund was created as part of a settlement agreement in a $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS filed by President Donald Trump’s family following the leak of their tax returns.
