To say that the London (KY) City Council and London Mayor Randall Weddle don’t get along is like saying oil and water have a little trouble mixing.
For some time, each side has taken shots at the other. But the latest episode has repercussions beyond just those two parties – now there are many city jobs at stake.
You can read coverage of the events of the past few weeks on Fox56 News. Here is a summary of this latest drama:
- A called meeting of the council on Wednesday, December 3, was cancelled by the mayor when so many people showed up that Weddle was worried about violating regulations about seating and accomodations.
- The mayor then announced that the meeting would be rescheduled for the next day in a larger room that could handle the crowd.
- After the mayor left on Wednesday, though, the council voted to override the ruling of the chair (Weddle) on cancelling the meeting. They then proceeded to meet without Weddle, and passed two ordinances.
- One resets the pay scale for city employees, and appears to eliminate up to 51 positions on the current payroll.
- The other prohibits the city from creating its own EMS service, and cuts payments to the city attorney for attending council meetings.
- Only one council member showed up for the announced Thursday meeting.
- Weddle said that the Wednesday council meeting was illegal, and that he plans to have the city file an open records violation with the state attorney general.
