Over 300 hundred people and two dinosaurs gathered for the “No Kings Rally” on October 18 in downtown Morehead. The group conducted a peaceful demonstration that included numerous signs, good cheer and an unprecedented number of supportive passerbys. Featured speakers included:
- Kay Tillow from Medicare for All
- George Wright, founder of the Kentucky Democratic Veterans Council
- Iva Markicevic Daley, abortion access activist and candidate for KY congress
- Nancy Gowler, minister of First Christian Church in Morehead
- Ned Pillersdorf, an Eastern KY attorney running in the 5th Congressional District
- Annette Hines from KY Tenants
- Logan Forsythe, Kentucky attorney running for the US senate.
Attendees expressed their opinions about a variety of topics including ICE overreach, loss of benefits for the most in need and the erosion of due process for citizens and immigrants by holding handmade signboards, leading chants and wearing t-shirts.
“No Kings” was the unifying theme for thousands of rallies across the United States and was meant to reflect that America has no king and that the power belongs to the people.
Capp Yess, a former Morehead State University physics professor, summed up his reaction to the large turnout saying, “Enthusiasm seems to be building against the actions of President Trump, even in small towns in red states.”
