Lexington, KY – Peaceful Bluegrass Resistance (PBR) plans a campus walk to protest the suppression of Constitutionally-protected First Amendment Rights by the University of Kentucky administration. The campus walk will be held on Monday, November 3rd, at 11AM. The walk will begin and end at the U.K. main gate, located at the intersection of Administration Drive and South Limestone, and will traverse a two mile route on the public sidewalks through and around U.K.'s main campus.
“At a time when the Trump administration is putting ever-increasing pressure on colleges and universities to adopt policies reflecting the administration’s authoritarian, racist, Christian Nationalist ideologies,” said PBR founder Dr. Craig Blair, “it is our responsibility as alumni and citizens to remind President Capilouto and the Board of Trustees that the university is part of a larger community. The U.K. students, employees, and faculty being affected are our families, friends, and neighbors, and while they are being intimidated into silence we refuse to sit idly by and watch our country deteriorate into a fascist state.”
From the dissolution of the university Senate to the shuttering of the Office of Institutional Diversity and discontinuation of identity-based graduation ceremonies, President Capilouto and the Board have displayed an all-too-eager willingness to capitulate when faced with the bigoted, racist, and authoritarian policies of President Trump, the MAGA-controlled Congress, and Kentucky’s own GOP super-majority state legislature.
This campus walk will be PBR’s fourth action on U.K.’s campus this year. There have been two previous campus walks (supporting foreign students and Free Speech, respectively) and a silent protest during a U.K. Board of Trustees meeting in June. “It is important that the University of Kentucky, as our flagship university, is aware that the citizens of Kentucky, alumni of U.K. and, indeed, the world are watching. History will judge harshly the actions of cowards,” stated Dr. Blair.
