Questions emerge over release of troubling Kentucky foster system report: ‘Political games’

Governor spox pushes back, says they weren’t give the report ahead of time

The governor’s office has responded to the bombshell report released by the Kentucky auditor of public accounts exposing the dangerous reality for Kentucky foster children.

The governor’s office issued its response on Tuesday suggesting that state officials learned of the report from the media, alleging the report wasn’t publicly available for “hours.”

“The Auditor is once again prioritizing political games rather than delivering accurate information to the public. This 129-page report was provided to the media hours before it was publicly released or shared with the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS). In doing so, the Auditor has violated a core auditing principle by releasing a report without giving CHFS an opportunity to review and respond,” Communications Director Scottie Ellis told FOX 56.

He said that the governor’s office is reviewing the report, but fears it may include significant errors and inaccuracies state officials couldn’t fact-check before its release.

“This means the report is likely to include significant errors and inaccuracies, just like the Auditor’s recent presentation under oath to a House committee. We are reviewing the report and are aware the Finance and Administration Cabinet’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) initiated its own independent study of nontraditional placements. CHFS is reviewing and responding to the Finance OIG’s findings, in keeping with auditing principles,” Ellis wrote.
