Reactions to Republican Reverse Robin Hood bill

From Kentucky and beyond

A gathering of reactions received in my inbox in just the past few hours.

Trump’s tax cuts come with a body count – starting with Grandma (Thom Hartmann)

Republicans are cutting Medicare. Not only Medicaid – Medicare
Passage of the Big Beautiful Bill will force mandatory sequestration that will mean half a trillion dollars in Medicare cuts. (David Dayan)

KDP condemns Kentucky Republicans for approving the largest loss of health care in U.S. history
“Today, Republican members of Kentucky’s Congressional Delegation approved the largest loss of health care in U.S. history. This budget kicks hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians off of Medicaid and forces rural families, regardless of their insurer, to leave their communities for basic care. Our Commonwealth will lose more than $12.3 billion in rural health care funding — more than any other state — shutting down as many as 35 rural hospitals and firing 20,000 health care workers. The long-term outcome of the GOP’s gross betrayal is an indefensible truth: rural clinics, hospitals, nursing homes and addiction recovery programs will disappear outside of big cities and Kentuckians who would otherwise have health care will lead shorter, sicker lives.” (Colman Elridge)

SPLC condemns passage of Republican-led budget bill
The Southern Poverty Law Center condemns the passage of the so-called “big, beautiful bill” by House and Senate Republicans. This budget is a reckless and dangerous bill that would push millions of people in America deeper into hunger, illness and poverty. While families across the nation struggle to make ends meet, this bill makes devastating cuts to essential services, all to fund tax breaks for large corporations and the ultra-wealthy. (SPLC)

KY-06 candidate Cherlynn Stevenson slams House passage of Big Ugly Bill
“There’s nothing ‘beautiful’ about ripping health coverage from hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians, shuttering dozens of rural hospitals in every corner of our commonwealth, and adding trillions of dollars to the national debt — all so billionaires can keep lining their pockets. This bill will unleash severe pain on communities across the state and hard-working families who have done nothing wrong will pay a steep price.” (Cherlynn Stevenson)

BREAKING: Trump’s Big Ugly Betrayal passed
217 Representatives, 50 Senators, and Vice President J.D. Vance just sold out millions of working families. That’s who voted to pass the Big Ugly Betrayal this week — slashing aid to families in need, cutting taxes for billionaires, and funding a huge expansion of Trump’s secret police force. Let’s be clear: nobody wanted this bill. Poll after poll found that far more voters disapproved than approved, and Common Cause members like you drove thousands of calls and letters in opposition over the past month. And your voice did make a difference. You can see that in the removal of special interest giveaways like Ted Cruz’s ban on AI guardrails, the razor-thin margin they had to pass it by, and the fact that so many of the “yes” votes had to lie that the bill doesn’t touch Medicaid (when it does, to the tune of 17 million people losing healthcare). (Common Cause)

The Republican budget bill is an albatross for everyone but the wealthy
The radical Republican budget bill steals from the poor to give massive tax cuts to the wealthy. And these tax breaks are such enormous giveaways to the rich that they will increase the deficit by nearly $4 trillion, even with the draconian cuts to health care and food assistance. If the Republicans wanted to add $4 trillion to the national debt, they could have instead written a $12,000 check to each and every adult and child in the United States. However, this grotesque bill would cause the bottom 40% of households to lose income on average. This country deserves better than this dumpster fire of greed, cruelty, and cowardice. (Economic Policy Institute)

One big, bullshit bummer
It’s ugly. It’s nasty. It’s a 0/10. It’s anything but beautiful. It’s the big, bloated, busted bill. At this point, we’re confident that you could ask a first-grader to write a piece of federal legislation, and it would come out better than the OBBB. At least we could get free chicken nuggets for all and mandatory stickers at the doctor’s office instead of handouts to billionaires and kicking millions of people off their health care. It turns out, the One Butt Ugly Bill is already unpopular with voters nationwide. After reading a description of the bill, a majority of voters (57%), including a majority of Independents (56%), oppose it. Strong majorities of voters are either “somewhat concerned” or “very concerned” about every provision we tested — particularly cuts to Medicaid (55% say they are very concerned). (Data for Progress)
