U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell criticized threats from the Trump administration to annex Greenland and called for continued cooperation with the Arctic region in a Jan. 7 statement.
“The northernmost reaches of the globe may well shape our strategic competition with major adversaries like Russia and China for decades to come,” McConnell said. “But if America behaves as though winning that competition requires trampling the sovereignty, respect, and trust of our allies, we will surely lose it.”
McConnell said that “close security cooperation” with Arctic allies “grants the United States sweeping access to positions of strategic importance.”
The statement comes after President Donald Trump, his aides and his supporters have discussed seizing Greenland from Denmark, according to a report from USA TODAY. Trump has previously said Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark that has a population of around 57,000, is a national security necessity with critical minerals and a strategic location. He has also refused to rule out using military force.
