Sen. Rand Paul will vote to approve a bipartisan resolution that would require congressional approval before taking further U.S. military action in Venezuela, Paul said in a Jan. 6 post to X.
The U.S. Constitution grants Congress the power to declare war, though past presidents have taken military actions without congressional approval, according to USA TODAY. If approved, the War Powers Resolution co-sponsored by Paul would block additional use of U.S. Armed Forces in Venezuela unless authorized by Congress.
“The American people do not want to be dragged into endless war with Venezuela without public debate or a vote,” Paul said in a Dec. 3 release about the resolution. “We ought to defend what the Constitution demands: deliberation before war.”
