The cowards in DC playing the short game

And ignoring the long-term consequences of their cowardice

Possible identities: Obama spokesperson, a Dem elected, Garland, Collins, Biden advisor, most voters today. But the point isn’t who they are; the point is that they didn’t step up when they could, as they looked only to the next election.

When people ask “How in the world did we get in this fascist mess?” there are always a multitude of answers of varying accuracy.

But one reason is clear: we are seeing our nation destroyed in real time because of the cowards in Washington who could have stopped it, but chose not to.

And note, I’m not just talking about Republicans. Yes, Mitch could have pushed for Trump’s conviction in the Senate; it likely would have happened, and Trump would have been unable to run again in 2020 or 2024.

But the Obama administration could have prosecuted members of the Bush administration for lying us into war and for authorizing and using torture. They chose not to, and told the world it was “time to move on.”

And the Biden administration could have prosecuted Trump for any number of crimes, including inciting an insurrection – but Merrick Garland chose to sit on his hands, even when the January 6th committee showed that Trump and his enablers were guilty.

Now we have toadies and enablers refusing to stop Trump’s illegal actions, and refusing to invoke the 25th Amendment even as Trump spirals into crazier and crazier statements and actions. They know — they know — that he should be removed – but they refuse to act, putting their own political careers above the good of the country.

This period in American history will be written about and studied decades from now. And just like we ask today about Germans in the 1930s, those people in the future will ask “Why didn’t anyone DO something?”

And just as we remember the names of the Hitler enablers and toadies, so too will the names of today’s enablers and toadies live in infamy.

Things are already very, very bad. If no one steps up, things will get much, much worse.
