From Leslie McColgin, co-leader of Four Rivers Indivisible:
On Friday morning, multiple matching SUV’s with their identifying lettering obscured were observed parked at a local Paducah hotel. They appeared to be identical to ICE vehicles. Whether they were just passing through, or here for an operation, Four Rivers Indivisible is planning to remind the community through a protest today (Saturday) that we dissent.
News reports around the country have shown that these over-funded, poorly trained, masked agents operating like a state “secret police” have not shown the high standards of conduct for immigration enforcement that our country should represent. There has been unnecessary brutality and disrespect, use of unnecessary force, use of tactics meant to instill fear, and failure to follow due process in far too many cases.
We protest to demonstrate that we care and that we do not support the unprofessional and unconstitutional tactics that have been sweeping cities across our country. Due process is for all! The rule of law is foundational to our nation and must be respected.
Our message is clear: Immigrant lives are of value, and immigrants deserve safety, dignity and respect.
We will protest on the sidewalks near the Wacinton sculpture in Bob Noble Park, which is the location of our large No Kings nationwide mass mobilizations this year. This event was planned late last night and we expect a small group to show up.
A core principle behind all Four Rivers Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.
