WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump issued a flurry of endorsements over the weekend, including for three Republican congressmen from Kentucky who are closely aligned with him.
In social media posts, the president said Rep. James Comer, R-Tompkinsville, “will never stop working to restore JUSTICE IN AMERICA.”
He praised Rep. Brett Guthrie, R-Bowling Green, for “working tirelessly to Advance American Energy DOMINANCE,” and said longtime Rep. Hal Rogers R-Somerset, has “never stopped fighting for the Working Men and Women of Kentucky’s Appalachian region.”
“If a member of Congress is almost certain to win reelection, it may seem wasteful for the president to bother to endorse them, but if nothing else, Donald Trump is probably aware of his win-loss record, and if he endorses a bunch of people very likely to win, it pumps up his scores,” said political analyst Stephen Voss.
Kentucky’s primary election is still six months away, and the president has not yet publicly backed any of the candidates running to replace longtime Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who announced in February that he won’t seek another term.
