Tuesday: ‘Stop the Healthcare Heist’ in Paducah

12:30 pm in front of Comer’s field office, 300 South Third Street

Via press release

Four Rivers Indivisible is participating in a national week of healthcare action sponsored by a coalition headed by the Economic Security Project Action.

This fall, 22 million people will see their healthcare premiums double, and 4.2 million will lose coverage – all to fund billionaire tax cuts.

Republicans in Congress have pushed healthcare cuts that will devastate working families, small businesses, and young adults. As open enrollment begins November 1, millions will learn their ACA premiums are skyrocketing due to more than $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and the ACA.

Here in Kentucky, a single individual making $22,000 per year will have to pay approximately $932 more per year for health insurance, a heavy burden at a time housing and food costs continue to leave many people struggling.

Statistics specific to the 1st Congressional district on the effect of the rate changes from www.acasignups.net, a trusted source of healthcare data that has been used in the past by the New York Times.

Rates on Kynect are now projected to rise for all by 25% to 37% and even employer-based plans are now projected to rise by as much as 30% next year because of the budget plan passed this past summer.

Four Rivers Indivisible will be hosting a protest to highlight the effects of these healthcare cuts and to call on Rep. Comer to come to the table with Democrats in Congress to find a solution. The Medicaid cuts also continue to be an area of serious concern as our most vulnerable citizens will also be losing services as those go into effect. As always, we also call on him to hold a community Town Hall in Paducah to address these concerns, as citizens are now faced with not only rising housing and food costs, but these additional burdens in accessing basic healthcare. It's possible there could be an inflatable chicken suited visitor at the protest again.

The National Week of Action is our moment to unite, expose who’s responsible, and demand better. We need better healthcare, not less healthcare, but Trump and Congressional Republicans voted to send our healthcare costs skyrocketing to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.

A core principle behind all of our events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.
