Judge Lucy Ferguson VanMeter has filed to run for the Kentucky Court of Appeals.
Judge VanMeter has more than two decades of experience in Kentucky’s state court system. She was elected to the Fayette Circuit Court in 2018 and presides over civil cases, felony criminal matters, and appeals from the Fayette District Court. Prior to serving on the bench, Judge VanMeter was an equity partner with one of Kentucky’s preeminent law firms where she practiced law from 2001 to 2018.
Judge VanMeter states, “My honor has been to serve on the Circuit Court. I am running for this election because I believe the Court of Appeals bench benefits when its members have deep practice experience in the state court system and have presided over cases as a trial judge. In my nearly 25-year career, I’ve handled just about every type of case that will come before the Court of Appeals and believe I can serve the people of Kentucky independently and honorably. As a judge, my rules for service are: 1) be prepared and on time; 2) listen to the parties; 3) apply the law and Constitution as written; 4) rule promptly; 5) ensure proceedings are fair; and 6) in criminal cases, always consider the safety and security of the community and impose a consequence for actions.”
As a member of Stoll Keenon Ogden, PLLC, VanMeter represented clients in Kentucky’s state court system from Paducah to Pikeville. Bill Lear, former managing partner at the firm, stated, “I’ve known Lucy VanMeter for almost 25 years. She was one of our brightest young lawyers and quickly became a full equity partner in our firm. I fully supported her 2018 decision to pursue a judicial career. In the last seven years, Judge Lucy VanMeter has proven herself as a diligent and thoughtful Fayette Circuit Judge. She has the experience, the intellect, and the even-handed approach that matter to practicing lawyers and their clients. She will be an excellent appellate judge.”
Judge VanMeter was raised in Bourbon County and held her first job in the eighth grade, student teaching at the Town and Village School of Dance where she began studying dance at the age of three. She graduated with honors from DePauw University and cum laude from University of Kentucky College of Law. VanMeter is AV® Preeminent™ Peer Review Rated by Martindale-Hubbell® and is highly rated by practitioners in the Kentucky Bar Association’s anonymous poll of lawyers.
Judge VanMeter seeks the seat vacated by Justice Pamela Goodwine who was elected to the Kentucky Supreme Court. The Court of Appeals is Kentucky’s intermediate appellate Court. The Fifth Appellate District includes eight counties: Bourbon, Clark, Fayette, Franklin, Jessamine, Madison, Scott, and Woodford.
